Via Grandis

Via Roma, formerly Via Grandis
The former Via Grandis, now Via Roma, stretched from the tram station to the centre of the village where the parish church was demolished in 1948. Just before reaching the Piazza Dolomiti along Via Roma, you can see the neoclassical town hall dating back to 1849. On the opposite side of the road, number 7, the Casa Moranduzzo can be seen. This was formerly the Albergo Al Genio, adjacent to the Albergo Cavallino.

Hotel Al Cavallino
The exposed walls of the hotel were once ornamented with a thick trompe l’oeil decoration with floral motifs. All the architectural elements including the windows, railings and signs, were based on those painted in a reciprocal harmonious link giving vivacity and beauty to the building which was originally bare. A recent renovation has simplified the decoration while maintaining some original elements, such as the paintings between the attic windows with lilac clematis, leaves and green volutes. During the summer season, the Via Grandis, shaded on both sides by rows of trees, was filled every day with the animated and noisy comings and goings of the holidaymakers who, when arriving at the entrance of the village by private carriages, omnibuses, horses or from 1910 by steam train, continued towards the centre preceded by porters carrying their luggage.
Their destination was the hotels or the rooms of the affitta-letti (beds for rent) that were found throughout Recoaro and that could accommodate the thousands of visiting holidaymakers.
